Merck and AMCM collaborate in the production of new generation tablets through 3D printing to achieve more flexibility and sustainability, as well as customization according to the patient need

The Pharma world is ready to revolutionize the way tablets are made. This is the philosophy that brings  Merck (also read how Merck uses blockchain and AI ), a company that operates in the health, life sciences and high-performance materials sector, and  AMCM (Additive Manufacturing Customized Machines), a subsidiary of EOS  (supplier of technologies in the field of industrial 3D printing of metals and polymers) that offers customized Additive Manufacturing solutions. The agreement provides for a cooperation relationship for 3D printing of GMP compliant tablets (Good Manufacturing Practice), initially made available for clinical trials, then moving on to complete digital solutions on a commercial scale.

Another project involving EOS in a completely different sector is the one that sees the customized production of nuts for customized rims whose texture is derived from the sound wave of the car owner’s voice. An initiative born from Ford that chooses to team up with the industrial 3D printing company to respond to the desire for user customization and the need for security to limit aggressions or thefts fueled by the digitization of the automotive sector. To read the complete news published on Internet4Things you can do it here  3D printing: with EOS Ford prints the anti-theft bolts

3D printing simplifies tablet development

This partnership enables a simplified process in the clinical development of drugs through powder bed fusion methods, in which a laser melts the powdered material, one layer at a time. In addition, 3D printing allows you to scale the formulation of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), avoiding costly reformulations throughout the entire pharmaceutical development and commercial production processes. As a result, tablet production can become faster and more convenient, flexible and locally sustainable according to specific market requirements, as well as to adapt to patients’ needs.

The production of new generation tablets through 3D printing is a project carried out in the Innovation Center of the Merck headquarters, in Darmstadt, Germany where the teams work on the development and upscaling of ideas to create new business activities that interconnect and go beyond Merck’s three business sectors: Healthcare, Life Science and Performance Materials.
